Adult Speech and language therapy

Overview

The Adult Speech and Language Therapy (QEH non-stroke) Service aims to enable people to communicate to the best of their ability through assessment, treatment and providing advice and support. We can also help people to swallow as safely and effectively as possible. The team are managed by NCH&C West Locality.

Our Speech and Language Therapists are part of a multi-disciplinary team and work closely with other professionals, such as doctors, nursing staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and dieticians.

Stroke patients are seen by a Specialist Speech and Language Therapy Team at the Hospital.

Outpatients, apart from those with voice disorders and head and neck cancer referrals, are seen by the Community Speech Therapists based at St James Clinic, King's Lynn.

Once the initial assessment has been completed, which may take several appointments, there will be time to discuss ways in which you and your therapist can work together. This may be in a variety of different ways, which may include:

  • Advice to yourself
  • Advice to other members of your family involved in your daily life and/or other professionals involved in your care
  • A course of individual therapy
  • Referral to other services

An information leaflet about the service is available.
