Podiatry Community

Overview

Podiatry is a branch of medicine devoted to the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle and lower leg.

As part of a Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust's Foot Health Team, community podiatry services aims to provide positive foot health advice to promote independence and self care. We offer core podiatry treatments to patients defined as high risk in order to prevent acute foot problems from developing that may result in hospital admission and possible surgical intervention.

We offer a nail surgery service at Norwich Community Hospital and St Jame's Clinic in Kings Lynn. This service offers definitive treatment for in-growing toenails, thickened or distorted nails, and traumatised and infected toes. Surgery is performed under a local anaesthetic by a podiatrist and patients will have their initial assessment and post-operative appointments at their local clinic coordinated by the podiatry team.

Referral Information

We accept professional referrals only. If you think you may need Podiatry services, you should see your GP.

NHS Podiatry services are available to patients with:

  • Moderate to severe foot problems requiring professional treatment
  • A Medical condition that puts the feet at high risk of foot complications

We are unable to provide treatment for the patients with low clinical need, for example, those who do not have medical conditions that impact on foot health and/or with minor foot problems, including social nail care.

I Need Regular Foot Care

What can I do?

There are private podiatrists that offer treatment in clinics or that will visit you at home. Lists of these can be found in yellow pages under 'podiatrists' or by searching on www.scpod.org and clicking on 'find a podiatrist'.

The title of 'Chiropodist' and 'Podiatrist' is legally protected - this means that only those who have undergone rigorous professional training (to degree level or equivalent) are allwed to call themselves Chiropodist or Podiatrist. We strongly advise you to make sure that your practitioner is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). All Podiatrists working in the NHS are NCPC registered.

You can check that your Podiatrist is HCPC registered by visiting www.hcpc-uk.org and clicking 'check the register'.

What to Expect at Your NHS Podiatry Appointment

  • The podiatrist will introduce themselves to you, by name and job title.
  • The podiatrist will then confirm some personal details with you such as date of birth and address.
  • You will be asked to provide a medical history.
  • Next you will be asked "tell us your story" regarding your foot problem.
  • We will ask you what outcome(s) you would like - how things will be for you if treatment is successful.
  • We will perform a comprehensive foot assessment to diagnose your foot problem.
  • A care plan will be discussed with you focusing on areas of greatest need.
  • We will give you support and advice to help you to manage your foot care.
  • If any treatment is needed, it will be provided.
  • If your foot condition requires more than one appointment, this will be discussed with you.
  • Your care plan will be reviewed at every visit and you will be involved in making any changes to the agreed care plan.
