A typical HCA in Norfolk Community Health and Care will support patients with their day-to-day care including:

  • Helping patients to wash and dress
  • Making and changing beds
  • Helping patients to eat and drink
  • Taking and recording basic observations, such as taking blood pressure checks, temperature and pulse checks
  • Turning patients who are confined to bed to prevent pressure ulcers
  • Helping patients to the toilet and assisting with their mobility

HCAs will typically work a shift pattern, although as an Apprentice some restrictions will apply in terms of working hours.

What were your reasons for applying?
I was at the end of my first year at college and didn’t feel like it suited me.  I’ve always wanted to be a nurse and when I saw the apprenticeship advertised I thought I would apply as it would help me gain the experience and qualifications I needed..

What was your key learning/achievement?
My main goal was to learn how to handle and care for all types of patients, I have learnt how important it is that all patients are treated as equals.

What are your plans for the future?
I have now started a new job (Community Healthcare Assistant Band 3), which I absolutely love I feel more confident in myself and my nursing practise now that I have had experience working on the ward. I am still learning a lot and would like to  complete another NVQ to help my career progression and my personal development.

What advice would you give others?
Save your money, study hard and keep going it’s worth it in the end.

Would you recommend this to others?
Yes I would, I feel like I have learnt a great amount in the Apprenticeship.
