Post Graduate Rotation Scheme for Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists

This scheme offers newly qualified occupational therapists (OTs) and physiotherapists (PTs) a broad base of clinical experience in a variety of settings and organisations. Norfolk Community Health and Care (NCH&C) works in partnership with the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Norfolk County Council Social Services for this purpose.

For occupational therapists, the rotations are 8 months in duration with rotations in the following clinical areas – orthopaedics, rheumatology, neurology, stroke rehabilitation, medicine for the elderly, paediatrics, learning difficulties, palliative care, intermediate services, community rehabilitation and social services.

For physiotherapists, the rotations are 4 months in duration with rotations in the following clinical areas – respiratory, musculoskeletal outpatients, paediatrics, burns and plastic surgery, neurology, orthopaedics, medicine for the elderly, long term conditions, intermediate services and community.

The new graduates are each supervised by experienced senior staff and have a formal review system. In addition they have a group training programme, one for occupational therapists and one for physiotherapists.

There is liaison with local and regional bodies including higher education institutes for workforce planning and development. The aims of the service are:

  • To provide a skilled OT & PT workforce now and for the future.
  • The Rotation Scheme provides Band 5 OTs and PTs to participating organisations enabling the latter to have an appropriate skill mix and career progression structure within their teams.
  • New graduates are supported in their learning and development to progress from the Rotation Scheme to more senior posts.
  • A large majority of OT/PTs on the Rotation Scheme obtain promotion within Norfolk benefitting local recruitment and retention of skilled staff.

Who this Service is for

There are currently 16 full time posts for OTs and 19 full time posts for PTs on the rotation. The numbers, clinical areas and settings are not fixed. Requests by organisations for an addition to the rotation will be considered in terms of clinical balance to the existing rotations and the team’s ability to support a new graduate.

The interview panel has partnership organisation representation. There is currently no fixed length of time that a new graduate may remain on the rotation.

Location

The administrative base for the scheme is Norwich Community Hospital.
