Empathy in Action: New Bariatric Suit Enhances Staff Training at NCH&C

Thanks to funding from the NCH&C Charitable Fund, staff at Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust (NCH&C) are now training with a specialist bariatric empathy suit, helping improve the safety, confidence, and compassion of care provided to patients with obesity.
The bari-suit®, developed by Benmor Medical and costing £1,620, is a wearable training tool that simulates the size, shape, and mobility challenges of bariatric patients. It allows staff to practise safe moving and handling techniques while gaining first-hand insight into the physical and emotional barriers many patients face.
Recently, Willow Therapy Unit staff received the first full training session using the suit. Five staff members attended and will now share their learning with colleagues.
Wearing the suit brought to life the difficulties patients face, said one participant. Simple things like lying flat felt completely different. It's something you can't fully understand until you experience it.
The session also covered body shapes (somatotypes), visual field limitations, and how positioning, reassurance, and communication can make a real difference to patient comfort and engagement.
Staff described how wearing the suit affected their sense of balance, vision, and ability to engage in conversation when lying in bed. Adjustments to positioning and staff awareness led to a noticeable improvement in comfort and inclusion.
It's more than just training - it's about empathy and understanding, said a trainer. This will help us care for our patients with greater dignity.
The suit will now be offered to more inpatient units and community OT teams across the Trust. While not a mandatory training tool, it adds significant value to staff development - and ultimately to patient care.
