Mini Donkeys for Wellbeing visited NCH&C patients at PBH

There were brays of joy and plenty of cuddles this week as two miniature donkeys trotted into the inpatient ward of Priscilla Bacon Hospice, bringing smiles, comfort, and a touch of magic to patients, families, and staff alike.

The visit was part of a well-being initiative by the NCHC Charitable Fund, which supports the Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust. The fluffy guests - named Pixie and Pippin - were welcomed into the hospice's gardens and even made bedside visits, creating unforgettable moments for patients receiving end-of-life care.

Staff described the visit as a lift for everyone, with patients visibly brightening at the sight of the gentle animals. One patient said: It was absolutely wonderful. They have given me a second and even third wind.  My girls will be thrilled that [they, the staff] have captured some images that they can retain for all time.

Miniature donkeys are known for their gentle nature and have been increasingly used in therapy work across the UK. Their presence has been shown to reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, and provide emotional comfort - particularly in palliative care settings.

Clinical Support Worker Natalie Gooch said: It was amazing to see how the donkeys transformed the atmosphere. Patients who hadn't spoken much became chatty and animated. Even our staff were beaming. It was a shared moment of joy during what can be very difficult days.

The visit was made possible thanks to donations to the Trust's registered charity  designated PBH fund, which allows for special experiences and therapeutic activities beyond clinical care.

We're so grateful to everyone who supports the charity, said Carol Plunkett, Charity Development and Project Manager. These visits are more than just lovely moments - they're meaningful, therapeutic experiences for palliative care patients and their families at such an important time.

Support more magical moments like this.
