Work experience at NCH&C
What is work experience?
Work experience at NCH&C is a great way to explore a career in the NHS before applying for a job or committing to a course of study.
It gives you a real insight into how the NHS works - especially useful if your only experience has been through TV or personal healthcare. Spending time with healthcare professionals helps you understand the skills needed to provide patient care and be part of a supportive team. It can also boost your confidence and give you a head start when applying for jobs or academic courses.
Work experience is open to anyone aged 14 and over who wants to learn more about NHS careers - not just those in education. It's also valuable for people considering a career change or returning to work after a break.
NCH&C is proud to hold the Bronze Work Experience Quality Standard award from NHS England, recognising the quality of our programme.
Work Experience - Summer 2026 Programme
NCH&C are pleased to announce that applications will open on Monday 03 November to midnight on Sunday 16 November for our Year 10 five day work experience programme, taking place in July 2026.
Programme details
The five-day, classroom-based programme will run from Monday 06 to Friday 10 July 2026 in Norwich.
It offers an engaging overview of a variety of NHS clinical professions, which may include:
- Nursing
- Physiotherapy
- Children's services
- Psychology
- Pharmacy
- Speech and language therapy
- Podiatry
- Occupational therapy
Students will take part in interactive sessions and presentations from a wide range of healthcare professionals, and will also enjoy a clinical visit on Day 4.
This is a nursing and therapy-led programme, featuring interaction with highly specialist services - offering a broader view of NHS care rather than a purely medicine-based experience.
How does work experience at NCH&C work?
We offer five-day work experience programmes in July and August each year:
- July: for individuals currently in education
- August: open to anyone, including those returning to work or exploring a career change
Each programme includes:
- Interactive classroom sessions with a range of healthcare professionals
- A clinical visit to a service aligned with your location and interests
- Employability skills and support with NHS job applications
Our programme covers a wide range of clinical services - ideal if you're interested in healthcare but haven't yet decided on a specialism.
During the five days, you'll meet NCH&C colleagues from teams such as:
- Community and inpatient nursing
- Clinical research (non-laboratory based)
- Dietetics
- Speech and language therapy
- Psychology
- Physiotherapy
- Occupational therapy
- Pharmacy
- Children's services
