All young people aged 16-17 are now eligible for a vaccine as part of the largest immunisation programme the NHS has ever seen. Other groups also eligible from this week are children aged 12-15 who are at increased risk of serious illness from COVID infection or are household contacts of individuals (adults or children) who are immunosuppressed.

The NCH&C vaccination team have lots of opportunities this weekend for vaccinations. There are walk-in clinics available for anyone aged 16 and over on Friday 13 August from 2pm to 8pm and on Sunday 15 August from 9am to 5pm. The clinics will be held at Norwich Community Hospital, Bowthorpe Road, NR2 3TU. Follow signs to Car Park C.

The Vaccination Bus will also be returning to North Lynn on Saturday 14 August and will be parked near the Seabank Post Office at St Edmundsbury Road, PE30 2NG.  This service will provide second Pfizer doses to those who may have visited the bus there on its last visit in June or who have had their first Pfizer dose elsewhere, more than eight weeks ago.

We are also returning to the UEA, near the Sportspark on Sunday 15 August from 11am to 5pm and on Monday 16 August, the team will be at Norwich City Football Club, near the ticket office, from 11am to 6pm.

Dr Anoop Dhesi, Clinical Chair at NHS Norfolk and Waveney CCG, said: “The majority of the 16-17 cohort will initially receive a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine as recommended by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation.

“Evidence has shown that just one dose of the Pfizer vaccine gives this age group around 80% protection from serious illness and hospitalisation from COVID. Further guidance about any planned second doses for this age group is likely to be published in the coming months.

“It’s important to note that 16-17 year olds who work in health and care settings will still need two doses of Pfizer in line with previous guidance and it is important that they are fully vaccinated by 11 November in order to keep working in these settings.

Two doses of vaccine will also be offered to children and young people aged 12 to 15 who are at increased risk of serious illness from COVID infection (including those with severe neurodisabilities, Down’s Syndrome, underlying conditions that result in immunosuppression and/or profound and multiple learning disabilities or severe learning disabilities) or are household contacts of individuals (adults or children) who are immunosuppressed.

Eligible 12-15 year olds will be contacted by the NHS to arrange a vaccination appointment.  16 and 17 year olds will either be contacted by the NHS or can visit a number of drop in vaccination clinics across Norfolk and Waveney.

Thanks to the ongoing participation of local people, 92% of the Norfolk and Waveney population aged 18+ now have at least one vaccine - and 80% have had both doses.

Almost 1.5 million doses of vaccine have been given across Norfolk and Waveney, with more than 18,500 of these in the last week (to Sunday 8 August).  Of these, 2,500 were first doses and 16,000 were second doses.

Despite their achievements so far, local NHS organisations and local authority partners are still determined that no one wanting a vaccine will be left behind. As well as the additional information and support provided by the ‘Worry Bus’, targeted outreach across towns, villages and cities continues to the areas with highest infection rates and lowest vaccine uptake.

Adds Dr Dhesi: “It’s vital that anyone aged 16+ who has not yet had a first vaccination now comes forward to get the very best protection before we get to autumn and winter.  I would encourage 16 and 17 year olds – and university students- to get their single dose vaccination as soon as possible so the majority of young people are protected before schools, colleges and universities re-open from September onwards.”

According to data published today by NHS England and NHS Improvement  92% of people aged over 18 in Norfolk and Waveney have received their first dose, putting us eighth out of the 42 health and care systems in England. Some 88% of adults in England have received their first dose.

Some 80% of people aged over 16 in Norfolk and Waveney have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, compared to 74% of adults in England.
