Black History Month 2025: Standing in Power and Pride

This year's theme for Black History Month is Standing in Power and Pride - a celebration of the strength, resilience and achievements of Black communities across the UK.

As part of our recognition, Eddy Smythe shared the remarkable story of his father, John Smythe QC, OBE, MBE (mil) - a pioneering figure whose legacy continues to inspire.

John Smythe came to Britain from Sierra Leone after volunteering to join the RAF during the Second World War. He was promoted to officer, joined Bomber Command, and trained as a navigator. In 1943, his aircraft was shot down over a heavily defended target. Despite being wounded, he parachuted to safety but was later captured and spent 18 months in a prisoner of war camp before being liberated.

After the war, while on secondment to the Colonial Office, John played a pivotal role in the early stages of the Windrush Generation - helping to shape the future of migration and multicultural Britain. He later qualified as a barrister and returned to Sierra Leone, where he became Attorney General.

Eddy's reflections on his father's life and the impact of the Windrush Generation offer a powerful reminder of the contributions made by Black individuals to our communities, our public services, and our shared history.
